An Evolution of Love
American Bungalow Magazine|Issue 91 Fall 2016

In 1972, my wife, Linda Sherman, was a recent graduate of the School of  the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and was looking for a place to house  her  printing  presses.

Ralph Johnston
An Evolution of Love

We  talked  about  updating  a  house,  and  a  friend  arranged for us to see one on the market. We were amazed that we would  purchase a home built in 1909 from the original owners and builders. We  entered a sealed bid, and raised our bid in case we were bidding against anyone. Linda loved the house, and we just knew we had to have it.

Our  friend who  had  told  us  about  the  house wanted  us  to  pay  her  by giving her the dining room chandelier. We decided not to. We were sure the  original owner had put it together with leaded glass and copper—and that it  was a treasure. Now, more than ever, I’m glad we kept it.

Linda passed away recently but she will always live on in this house. Our  attic is full of art she produced—prints, lithographs and silkscreens. She also  painted, and several agents sold some of her work. The evolution of our love  for Craftsman homes and Arts and Crafts elements began with her and her  artist’s eye.
