Marking the International Women’s Day, Women in Leadership (WIL) initiated the first ever WIL FEST on 8-10 March at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Presented by Freedom Sanitary Napkin, WIL FEST 2018 comprised of Women Leadership Summit, Inspiring Women Award, Freedom of Choice Exhibition, Startup Talk and several other components.
This year’s theme of the festival was owning and visibility. Owning represents the self- belief and confidence through which women professionals embrace themselves to achieve success through their individualistic essence. Visibility entails how they represent themselves and in turn impact and influence their perception in society.
Nazia Andaleeb Preema, celebrated visual artist, president of WIL and convener of WIL Fest, told Dhaka Courier that one must own oneself to pursue leadership. “WIL is the power to provide women the ownership and visibility, therefore to understand the core essence of leadership. A society is never complete without the direct involvement and contribution of women. It’s crucial to be surrounded by strong-willed, hardworking and purpose-driven women.”

My recent trip to Cox’s Bazar, some 20 odd years later, however, was starkly contrasting in that the circumstance was dire, one which continues to sit steep in my mind.
