Between the Lines: Steve Chaszeyka Loading your brushbox
Pinstriping & Kustom Graphics Magazine|June - July 2020
Steve has been pinstriping for more than 50 years and has gained a worldwide reputation. A charter member of the PINSTRIPING HALL OF FAME, he has pioneered many new looks in pinstriping and has taught many newcomers to perfect their own style through both group and 1-2-1 classes as well as his popular Wizard Pinstriping DVD tutorials and signature brushes. The aim of this column is to inspire pinstripers of all levels in their use of colour and design.

STEP 1

Techniques like blends are best done with a brush like this craft store “flat”. Synthetic hairs allow quick release of paint and give you smooth transitions.

STEP 2

Results are soft and easy to change or correct. Wide sweeps and a soft touch are the key.

STEP 3

Thin long scroll lines are always best completed with a brush that is designed for outlining and scrolling. This particular brush was designed for “Chicago Brushmasters” and is available from Mack Brush Co. This is my new secret weapon for tiny scrolls.

STEP 4

Using the wrong brush, or one that is damaged (not clean, spalyed bristles for example) will give terrible results. This choppy lettering is the result of trying to use a brush that should be discarded. If it’s giving this result, try to clean with a wire or plastic “toothbrush” with some harsh thinner, then oil it up. Sometimes you can recover the brush, but not always.

STEP 5

Pulling lines whether long on a car, or designing the dagger style striping, this is my one and only _ Mack series 10. Truly an old school brush, the blue wrap has no rival. I love the wooden handle and predictable results.

STEP 6

Control, reliability, durability, confidence and, oh Yes! PRACTICE!

STEP 7

I was accepted to Art & Design where, at the time, we had to take four periods of art. I fell in love with the airbrush and never put it down since 1988. Fast forward to today, and I continue my education, I attempt to take yearly airbrush classes, in order to improve and grow.
