I have been painting kustom kulture themed art for around 15 years mainly acrylic on canvas, however I have been drawing and painting for most of my life. I have also dabbled in different forms of art including airbrush and pinstriping, not really getting much enjoyment from this, I decided to hang my brushes up for a while until I found something that I really enjoyed.
After a couple of months of wondering what to do next, my boss asked me to build a giant hot dog for the roof of his race car. It had to be tough and withstand the pounding of a race track, to add to the challenge - it was a 24 hour Le Mans style race.
I decided to make the hot dog out of polystyrene and then coat it with layers of fiberglass. To my surprise it worked, and stayed on for the duration of the race. I actually enjoyed building it but then I was left wondering what to do next? As most artists will testify, your mind never really stops thinking about your next project. Then it dawned on me, why not build a giant Rat Fink!
I searched the internet for weeks looking at Rat Finks and other fiberglass sculptures, I wanted a challenge and had found one, was I crazy? Probably…..
I have had no training, nor had any idea about sculpting, so I thought “what the hell, it’s either going to work or it’s not”.
