30th CRAKK Run

The 30th CRAKK run was always going to be something special. It was, after all, an anniversary year. A milestone. Thirty years! The Canberra Hot Rod Association must be doing something right to have kept this event going for so long, right? Well, that might be part of the reason, but the Australia Day long weekend has been the date for a rod run in Canberra since 1977, when the Meteors put on the first Canberra Rod Run. Then the Wizards did their bit with the annual camp-out at the Cotter, with the CHRA putting on the first CRAKK run in 1991.

The first activity of the run was available to early arrivals – a well-attended cruise to the Australian War Memorial on Friday afternoon to witness the Last Post ceremony. Very moving for this group!

The co-ordinator for the inaugural event was Ian Walton. So it was appropriate that the second event on the weekend’s program was the meet and greet featuring the past co-ordinators, who were all presented with certificates of appreciation for their contribution to the event over the years. Ian was there in his ’39 convertible to celebrate with us.

In fact, all but one of the coordinators since the very first CRAKK run attended. A rolling history of the CRAKK run was played all night as entrants tried desperately to empty the beverage trailer and stuff away the smally eats as the Friday night celebrations wore on, while a display of 30 CRAKK’s T-shirts was on display throughout the weekend.
