When we got an opportunity to drive the Ioniq and sample some of Hyundai’s next gen technologies, we jumped at it and were pleasantly surprised.
Hyundai Motor India had announced that it would have the Ioniq Hybrid at the 2018 Auto Expo as a precursor to its launch in the country. But given the current tax scenario with the implementation of GST, we do not think any manufacturer will be in a hurry to launch hybrids in the country. However with the government’s ambitious targets for electric cars and also with Tesla negotiating with the government to launch fully electric cars in the country, the scenario for fully electric cars does seem brighter and depending on the incentives and duties prevalent at the time and the government’s commitment towards providing infrastructure for fully electric cars, Hyundai may very well choose the electric version of the Ioniq for India.
It was with this background that when we got the opportunity to drive one of the three Ioniqs available in Europe that we chose the all-electric one and as luck would have it, we got the car in the coastal town of Klaipeda on the Baltic sea to the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. And as we wanted to do some photography on the way, we planned a route that was about 400km long, with planned stops for lunch as well as an early dinner.
