The orange yoke belongs, or used to anyway, to Mick (The General) ó Brien, and the green yoke to Darragh and Oisín, his sons. We’ll start with The General’s – this build goes way back to the CBF (Custom Bike Fabricators – our old shop in Cork) days, when Mick bought an Evo’ motor, gearbox, and primary off Sully, the frontman at CBF (also called ‘Auntie Kitty’ by us hard-working guys in the background). The parts sat in his front room for many years, until one day he and myself happened to find a Harley hardtail frame at a swap meet at a bike shop somewhere up the country. He bought it and, again, the parts sat in his house for another while. During that time, though, he was collecting useful parts that’d someday be part of a new chopper – including a pair of three-spoke Kawasaki wheels, and a lovely Tolle adjustable rake front end from Steve Maher in Dublin (which were just a modest six-inch over, so a new set of 14-inch over tubes were ordered).
At some stage all the bits were dropped off at my workshop, and it just so happened that, at the time, I needed work done in the bathroom at home so a deal was done as Mick’s handy at that sort of thing – he did the bathroom, and I cut up the frame he had, saved the cradle, and made a new frame around it in a Swedish sort o’ style (the three-spoke wheels were going to be replaced at some stage when money was available, but that never quite happened).
The next jobs were to cut up a King Sportster tank to widen and stretch it, make an oil tank, new ’bars, new ’pipes, and various other bits and bobs. Mick made the one-off mudguards himself in fibreglass, and two side panels to give the oil tank a better look (think he also made the belly-pan).

I BOUGHT MY ENFIELD, A 2001 350 BULLET, IN SHROPSHIRE IN JUNE 2019, WITH JUST 11,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK. IT WAS IN TRIALS TRIM, BUT I ALREADY HAD IN MY HEAD WHAT I WANTED TO DO WITH IT – MAKE IT INTO A ‘50S-STYLE CUSTOM, BASED LOOSELY AROUND AN INDIAN SCOUT THAT I’D SEEN PICTURES OF.
