Our new man’s Scirocco is a beauty, but could its misbehaving Pierburg carb be signalling other problems to come?
Looking back on my Scirocco experiences so far, I would have felt justified in being just a little smug – I’d bought exactly the right car for the job and all was going well. On the first count at least, I think I still have a point…
The Scirocco is my only car and appealed as a compromise candidate when I was looking to replace the last in a string of Minis I parted with last year. I think it’s one of the Eighties’ best-looking cars at any price point, and with a budget of £3000 in my pocket and insurers very much still suspicious of my relatively short driving career, few other cars ticked more boxes than a Scirocco MkII.
Finding good Sciroccos can be tricky, so when I saw a private advert for a low-mileage, low-owner car not far from where I was living at the time, I jumped at the opportunity.
