Northern Irishman Darwin Smith took a hard-earned double as the Historic Sports Car Club returned to Oulton Park for its Gold Cup meeting from 26-28 August. Smith led a 25-strong field in the FIA Historic Formula Two encounters, his March 722 coming home ahead of Richard Evans (March 742), who ran Smith close in Monday’s race.
The Historic FF1600 grid was typically close across two heats, Richard Tarling edging Callum Grant by only 0.3 secs after a combined 40 minutes of racing.
Russell Paterson defeated two generations of Barter to take the 70s Road Sports laurels. The Morgan Plus 8 driver assumed the lead when Charles ran wide at Cascades in his Datsun 240Z, while Charles’ son Julian had to settle for second after running out of brakes. He’d cooked them during a charge from the back of the grid in his Lotus Europa.
