Bronco Options, a New Four-speed, an Alternative to the Divorced 'case, and More From 1966

As Four Wheeler magazine is celebrating its 60th anniversary throughout 2022, our nostalgia levels remain high and we dove into the archives. With no particular rhyme or reason, we flipped open the October 1966 edition of the magazine, landing on these highlights from Ford, Chevy, and Dodge.

Looking back at the Bronco, Ford introduced a limited-slip differential for its frontend. The LSD was always available for the Bronco’s rearend, but this was a first for the forward pumpkin. Other new items introduced for the ’67 Bronco included moving the transfer case shift lever to the floor, the addition of a padded instrument panel and visors, four-way emergency flashers, reverse lights, and windshield washers. Ford also offered an 11.5- gallon auxiliary fuel tank beneath the driver seat that was protected by a skidplate.

Ford’s Fairlane Ranchero elicited these words from the author of the 1966 story: “If you think the truck market is not changing try to explain these goodies: StereoSonic tape system, power disc brakes, GTA Cruise-O-Matic, and air conditioning.” The author went on to comment that the vehicle was “difficult to even call a pickup, let alone a truck,” as it looked and handled like a Ford passenger car.
