New Triton Better In Every Which Way?
Leisure Wheels|January 2019

Make no mistake: Mitsubishi’s Triton is one capable bakkie. Sadly, because of myriad reasons, the current Triton has been selling in very limited numbers in South Africa. Now the new Triton has been revealed and it appears to have the credentials to take the fight to class leaders like Toyota’s Hilux and Ford’s Ranger. Here’s what we know about the new Triton that arrives here in the first quarter of 2019.

New Triton Better In Every Which Way?

THE MITSUBISHI COLT BAKKIE STARTED IT ALL.

Back in its heyday, more than 1 000 new Colts were sold every month and the bakkie soon garnered a bit of a cult following. To this day, many fans still drive a Colt with hundreds of thousands of kilos on the clock, and swear by it.

The current Triton though, has had a less glamorous ride here in SA. Thanks to factors such as unfavourable exchange rates and availability of specific derivatives, Mitsubishi postponed the introduction of this Triton; so much so that many fans tired of waiting for it to arrive and took up juicy offers from mainstream players such as Toyota and Ford.

Rubbing further salt into Mitsubishi’s wounds was the introduction of the Fiat Fullback – which is essentially a rebranded Triton – before the actual Triton arrived. But that’s now all water under the bridge as Mitsubishi looks ahead to the introduction of the next generation Triton in early 2019.
