Recently I wrote an article about the Garmin eTrex 35, a touchscreen, outdoor, lifestyle, handheld navigation device best suited for hiking and maybe offroading or just as a backup. I seriously believe if someone is venturing off into the unknown a second device is always necessary, even if only a cellphone with GPS capabilities.
But times change and so does technology. At the end of 2018 Garmin launched the new Garmin GPSMAP 66 – the upgrade and new version of the older Garmin GPSMAP 64 series. I guess it can be said that, 20 years down the line, this device represents the direct progression line of the old Garmin III or III+ which dated back to before 2000. The III or III+ was never my favourite; I preferred the Garmin GPS 12 MAP which was the Garmin III+ in a more rugged casing, which made it more suited for the outdoor adventurer.
A few things caught my eye when going over the GPSMAP 66 spec sheet:
