Although The New Hollies is one of the oldest truckstops in the country, it is striving to keep up with the times by making a major investment to upgrade the facilities.
The New Hollies – previously just plain old The Hollies – has a long history for a truckstop, going right back to the 1930s, its website claiming it to be the oldest in the country. To celebrate this, pictures hang on the wall of the restaurant to show how it – and the customers – looked through the decades.
But it was the future that was the focus on the day T&D visited The New Hollies. Punctuating the general hum of patrons chatting over their breakfasts was the occasional bout of noise from the unseen building work going on behind the restaurant. That, explains Kelly Johnson, manager of The New Hollies, is the sound of an extension being built.
“There is big investment going into The New Hollies from the owner [Road King],” says Johnson. “We are having new rooms upstairs and there will be more showers coming soon, along with downstairs toilets.”
That’s not the only development in progress at The New Hollies. At the time of writing, four new fuel pumps were being built. A truck-wash bay is also in the pipeline, Johnson adds.
