Tranz-Tech is now established as one of the UK’s leaders in truck customisation. We paid a visit to its HQ to check out some of the ongoing projects and speak to the team
As we’ve travelled round truck shows, organised photoshoots and looked at various new truck builds on social media over the last year or so, one name kept cropping up again and again: TranzTech. The firm’s custom fabrication work was creating a lot of interest, and some of the finest trucks to hit the road recently had spent time being fettled by the Wisbech-based metal wizards. Trucking just had to find out more.
Business partners Richard Lord and Shaun Plumb set up Tranz-Tech three years ago. Richard’s background is in aluminium and stainless fabrication work, while Shaun’s is electrical – the ideal combination. They worked together at various places around Wisbech, building and repairing truck bodies and trailers. With both sharing a passion for creative fabrication work, the decision was taken to start up on their own – and word quickly spread.
One of a kind
Right from the start the company ethos was based on providing bespoke products. Everything is made to order and designed to fit a specific vehicle. They won’t send you a catwalk mailorder, or run off a batch. “A lot of customers don’t know the extent of what we do,” explains Richard. “They come in to get a lightbar fitted and then end up ordering other things.”
Shaun adds: “You’re dealing with the person who will work on your truck; you don’t deal with a salesman whose trying to sell you stuff you don’t need, who then passes the job on to a fabricator.”
The arrival of the new Scania cabs – the S-series in particular – has seen many firms seeking special equipment and personal touches for their new trucks. Tranz-Tech quickly came up with a method to retrofit the old R-series A-frame to the new models, as for some reason they don’t come with one.
