Where to start?

Having finally arrived, Ian decides where to go next with his Portuguese import ’68

Where to start?

To be honest, I’ve spent the last few weeks breathing a huge sigh of relief. If you missed last month’s instalment, I spotted the ’68 1500 online, paid for it then waited what seemed like an eternity for it to be transported from sunny Portugal to my home in Brittany, France. At one point, I was convinced I’d been mugged off and that the closest I’d get to seeing the thing would be a fuzzy screen image from the original advert. Oh ye of little faith…

So it’s now been sitting cosily in my workshop for the best part of four weeks while I’ve variously been trying to get my first issue of VolksWorld to press and decide what I am actually going to do with it.

So here’s the plan. Firstly, I am going to make it road worthy, take it for its Control Technique (the French equivalent of an MoT) and go from there. In the meantime, I need to investigate precisely what’s involved registering it here in France. I’ve been sent the vehicle’s logbook, another virtually indecipherable signed document and a receipt from the seller, so I am hoping that will be enough for the local préfecture in Vannes to grant me the necessary Cartes Grise. The last time I was there registering the Audi, it took two return visits and lots of  Gallic shrugging of shoulders before they relented.

NICE ONE, SHERLOCK!

It’s fun investigating a car’s past – especially if the vehicle in question dates from the early fifties. That said, the Norwegian owner of this ’52 Beetle discovered more than he bargained for when he donned his deer-stalker

PUTTIN' ON THE SHOW

When it comes down to rating the most desirable air-cooled VWs, I think it’s fair to say that a ’50s Karmann Cabriolet is gonna’ be pretty close to the top of the list. Now add some accessories, Fuchs and a decent stance and you’re talking about the stuff dreams are made of…
