"I usually send items the next day, but on this occasion the post office was closed, so because the item only had a few miles to travel I delivered it on my way from work. At this point I didn’t really give any old VW a second glance as I had been completely bored at college by a lad that I had the misfortune to share a ride with for a few weeks back in my late teens”.
The guy to whom Kevin Williams was delivering on that fateful day, Rick, offered to sell ‘Hattie the Frankenbus’. It’s a complete oddity and consists of what appears to be the bodywork of a shortened bay panelvan complete with the narrowest sliding door in the world, but with the rear of a split pick up grafted on. A kind of bay/split triple cab! Like the bus’ owner and many, many other people, I have never seen anything quite like it before or since. It was apparently done a long time ago by an owner who has become lost in the mists of time. There are shades of 1970’s custom about it, and I can only guess that it might have been involved in a biggish shunt. The price Kevin negotiated included the work required to get the bus through a fresh MOT.

Lance & Lisa Beaver tell the story of their...‘Old School' Westfalia Bay
The history of our bus is varied. I heard that it used to belong to a soccer player who lived in it for a while, and a tale of a cross country trip that was taken in it. Since we’ve owned it, we have been to numerous car shows with our car club Kahiko Kula and enjoy that immensely, but taking it camping is our joy.
