Muscat University is a newly formed University. What is the significance of the University in the educational sector’s growth in Oman?
Muscat University is a new university in the capital city of the Sultanate, which began operations in late 2016.
Muscat University is a corporate social responsibility initiative by 37 leading Omani individuals, families, businesses and institutions with quality, not profit, as the primary driver and with the clear purpose of addressing the gap between industry and higher education. The University is financially supported by the Founders and the Omani government.
Among its guiding principles are that Muscat University must be innovative and entrepreneurial, that it must build an effective bridge for its students from education, through employability to employment, that its students must acquire skills fit for the 21st century, that the University will embrace the benefits of technology, and that a key goal of the university is internationalisation.
By positioning itself as comparable to high quality international universities, Muscat University offers a viable local alternative for Omani students and expatriate students resident in Oman who otherwise might feel obliged to travel outside Oman for access to appropriate higher education opportunities.
