Seaborne coking coal offers increased in June on continuous high demand from Asian markets excluding China. However, supply continued to remain tight.
According to information available with Steel Insights, the premium variety was quoted at $190 per ton FOB Australia on June 30, 2021 as against $152 on May 28.
Peak Down prices were quoted at $191 per ton FOB Australia on June 30 as compared to $153 per ton on May 28. Australia to India dry bulk freight rates stood at around $27 per ton for panamax vessels.
Demand for seaborne coking coal in India remained subdued on declining steel demand due to arrival of monsoon. Metallurgical coke prices also declined in line with the falling steel demand.
The ongoing safety checks and suspension of operations at various coal mines in China led to supply concerns.
Australian coking coal prices have been stable on rising demand from Japan, South Korea and India. The three Asian countries consumed the oversupply following China’s import ban on Australian coals since mid-October 2020.
