Gross sponge iron production in July 2018 increased 1.8 percent to 2.51 million tons (mt) as against 2.46 mt in the same period last year, according to provisional data from the Joint Plant Committee of the steel ministry.
On a month-on-month basis gross production increased 3.2 percent over 2.43 mt produced in June 2018.
In the April-July period of 2018-19, gross sponge iron production rose 1.2 percent to 9.99 million tons as against 9.87 million tons in the same period last year.
Among the major producers, Essar’s production jumped 13.7 percent to 1.62 million tons in the seven month period of the current financial year, while JSW’s production rose 17.7 percent to 857,000 tons. However, JSPL’s sponge iron production fell 14.6 percent to 446,000 tons in the April-July period.
Production by other producers also declined 1.8 percent to 7.06 million tons during the seven month period of the current financial year.
