A night for visionaries and perfectionists
Once a year, every year, the leading lights of India’s retail jewellery industry gather in Mumbai to honour the greatest recent design achievements of their peers. At the annual Retail Jeweller India Awards, these mega-achievers set aside their competitive instinct to raise high, in the spirit of mutual respect, the flag of this industry.
The RJIA is India’s preeminent national platform for excellence in the jewellery industry. Each RJIA awardee is acknowledged as setting the standard for the year in creativity and workmanship. Placing at the head of the field, each awardee also earns acknowledgement as a harbinger of changing tastes and expectations among jewellery aficionados nationwide.
The 15th annual RJIA awards ceremony took place in the Grand Ball Room of the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai, on 10 August 2019. Over 600 guests were present at this gala event, each waiting with bated breath to know who the winners would be. As always, the quality of submissions was exceptionally fine.
The final selection was made by the RJIA Grand Jury. The Grand Jurors were a balanced team of eight discerning and highly regarded jewellery connoisseurs and marketing experts. The Grand Jurors determined the winners of the RJIA’s 20 categories of design award and four categories of awards in marketing.
Veteran observers will note that, while the number of RJIA award categories this year was the same as in 2018, several new categories were introduced to replace older ones. As always, the RJIA team is attentive to the subtly changing tastes of Indian jewellery consumers, and respectful of the deep social, cultural and stylistic roots of jewellery in India.
Three new categories, for instance, reflect the raging trend in heritage polki: Bridal Heritage Polki Design of the Year, Heritage Polki Earring of the Year, and Heritage Polki Bracelet of the Year.

The Indian gold jewellery sector’s journey towards hallmarking has been long, slow and bumpy. Although voluntary hallmarking became available in April 2000, compromised gold was still widely sold in the market — a fact of which neither public nor government was ignorant. In June 2021, however, hallmarking became mandatory. Manufacturers, jewellers and consumers now must quickly come to grips with the new purity norms, which juxtapose a unique six-digit ID for each item with the utterly inadequate state of India’s hallmarking infrastructure.
