ANDIE CHEN and KATE PANG’s new Chinese New Year music video ‘EFG’ racked up over 87,000 views on Facebook within a week. We egged Andie on for some behind-the-scenes goss.
8 DAYS: ‘EFG’ is about the alphabet and, um, chickens. So who, um, hatched the idea?
ANDIE CHEN: (Laughs) It’s our kind of humour — we wanted our music video to be nonsensical, quirky and happy... something the audience can have a good time watching. The underlying message of the song is that we have to be contented with what we have, and not always compare and compete with others. Since it’s the year of the Rooster, we used the Chinese word for ‘chicken’ in our lyrics. [The ‘G’ in ‘EFG’ sounds like chicken in Mandarin.] We also wanted a Chinese New Year song that’s not dated and traditional. We wanted something fun and relevant for the younger generation. Kate wrote most of the lyrics but I altered the rap portion ’cos she has no sense of rhythm (laughs).
