So what if homegirl-done-good JOANNA DONG finished third on Sing! China? Trust the jazz sensation and her mentor Jay Chou to make a running gag out of it.
Doing Singapore proud: For the finals, Joanna, 35, and her mentor Jay Chou sang a mash-up of Jay’s ‘Simple Love’ and The Carpenters’ ‘Top Of The World’, before Joanna performed her solo song, Fong Fei Fei’s ‘Applause’. Following her ousting, Tibetan teacher Zha Xi Ping Cuo, 30, edged out 17-year old student Guo Qin to emerge the champion. Joanna is the second Singaporean to make it to the contest’s finals, after Nathan Hartono, who finished second place last season.
8 DAYS: Congrats on finishing third place in Sing! China! What was the first thing you did after the competition?
JOANNA DONG: The moment I left the stage, I was greeted backstage by big, warm hugs from my team mates and friends from other teams. Much later that night, we ended up in a KTV where we sang the songs each of us sang during the competition till the wee hours of the morning. Did you know that you can find those songs complete with our Sing! China footage in karaoke bars in China? It was hilarious and emotional all at once, and a poignant way to end our journey together.
