Gayle King rises and shines as co-host of CBS This Morning
IT CAN’T GET BETTER THAN THIS,” media queen Gayle King thought five years ago. She had a radio show, a TV show on OWN (the network of her BFF, Oprah Winfrey) and served as editor-at large at O, The Oprah Magazine. But, says the Emmy Award-winning veteran journalist, “Au contraire; it can get better!”
Enter CBS This Morning, the brainy early morning news show King co-anchors with Charlie Rose and Norah O’Donnell. With its tagline “The News Is Back,” the telecast has, since its January 2012 debut, become the only one of the big three morning network shows to deliver viewership growth, presenting hard news without a trace of the usual A.M. cuteness. Says King, “We’re in the game now, and I’m loving it.”
Yes, and how divinely audacious that doing the early morning news straight, with thoughtful, important interviews, would be ratings gold. Your show has the highest numbers CBS has scored in that time slot in 28 years.
It works because it’s Charlie, Norah and me, and we have chemistry that you can’t plan, can’t make up, can’t fake. So we’re going up and somebody’s gotta be coming down. [Laughs.]
