Kajol Tells It Like It Is

KAJOL.

There’s something indefinable about her that escapes expression.

Having seen most of her films, you feel you know her intimately. And at some level, you do because like every actor, she leaves a part of herself in her roles. But at another level, she’s a stranger. she’s at once warm and engaging and at the same time, cool and detached. Actors never show us their vulnerable face. Maybe because they can’t afford to. Not in the dog-eat-dog world they live in, where any weakness is pounced upon by rivals like a prize. Where anything and everything can be used against you. So they hide behind a thousand masks, a thousand faces. The only place they can take off that mask is ironically in front of the camera. They laugh, they cry, with abandon, revelling in the freedom the limelight brings. In Tribhanga, Kajol plays a classical dancer who is also a superstar actor. She’s also someone who has a strained relationship with her mother. Someone who cusses like a sailor and someone who yearns to be loved without being judged. It’s an all-heart performance from Kajol yet again. Whether it was all an act or something closer to the truth...ask her and she only hints... not revealing much. Excerpts from a candid conversation with the firebrand actress who over the years has learnt to mind her ps and qs...
