First impressions count. And when it comes to Canada’s postcard-perfect town of Banff, the long journey is worth it! Then again, when you’re travelling on the Rocky Mountaineer, named one of the world’s best train trips, life is pretty wonderful.

It’s my first venture into the Canadian Rockies and there is arguably no better way to do it. Oh-so shiny and impossibly huge, the train oozes pure luxury from the inside out. The red carpet is rolled out (literally!) as we are ushered up to premium GoldLeaf seating under a glass-domed roof offering incredible views – and the luxury doesn’t stop there!

The spacious carriage comes with leg room for days, personal tray tables, heated seats that fully recline and spin you around 180 degrees, which means you can create a party of four with your neighbours if you like to mingle. The dining carriage on the first floor rivals any silver-service restaurant with its expansive windows, so you can gaze while enjoying your meal. The à la carte breakfast and lunch menu comes with free flowing drinks, and I count down the hours between meals.
