The 2020 Olympics are well underway in Tokyo, and one person who knows about the euphoria of victory for Team GB is Luke Campbell. The boxer won gold at London 2012 and became the first British boxer to win the title in his weight division since 1908.
“I will never forget being on the podium with my gold medal,” Luke tells OK!. “I was crying and laughing at the same time.”
Following his Olympic win, Luke was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen in 2013, something he calls the “icing on the cake”.
But the 33-year-old recently made the difficult decision to retire from boxing to spend more time with his young family after lockdown gave him an insight into what life away from the sport could be like. And it’s clear the sportsman is content with his decision.
“I was missing out on so many moments before,” admits Luke as we join him, his model wife Lynsey and their three sons Leo, 11, Lincoln, eight, and Levi, 10 months, at their gorgeous six-bedroom home – complete with a very healthy looking trophy cabinet – in Hull.
Here, Luke and Lynsey, who have been together for 14 years and tied the knot in 2015, open up about Olympic memories, the unusual way in which Luke proposed and why he missed the birth of their first son…
Hi both. Tell us about your home…
Lynsey: We’ve lived here since 2017. I love the location and the privacy, but my favourite thing has got to be the fire pit in the garden.
Luke: We have a hot tub, too, and the kids love that. My favourite thing is my bed. It’s twice as big as any other bed.
