THE END OF ELLEN

Her funny persona and “Be kind” philosophy has attracted hundreds of A-list celebrities to join her on stage. But after a scandal-filled year, where she faced allegations of being out of touch and overseeing a toxic workplace culture, Ellen DeGeneres has decided to pull the plug on her once-popular daytime talk show.

The comedian, 63, announced on May 12 the 19th season of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will run into early 2022, will be it's last. Despite the problems that have plagued the star for the past 14 months, DeGeneres insisted they weren’t the reason she was stepping down.

“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun, as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres told The Hollywood Reporter.

The problems started for the former actress in March 2020, after a Twitter thread asking people to post “insane” stories about DeGeneres being “notoriously one of the meanest people live” went viral and received over 2000 replies. A month later she faced further backlash when she compared the filming of her show from her lavish $34 million Montecito estate during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown to “being in jail”.
