Share story time with your baby and you’ll be doing more than teaching her the sounds of letter and words. MH explores what inspiring an early reader brings.

Time to Read

From fairy tales to Shakespeare, did you know that by reading to your little baby, you could stimulate her imagination and positively affect her intellectual and emotional development – simply by hearing the sound of your voice? Not only does it soothe her, it makes her feel protected and provides a sense of comfort.

If you’ve never even thought of reading to your baby before, it’s time to start. But why read to babies when they can’t even understand what you’re saying? By reading rhyming stories and even poems, the soothing rhythm of your voice will calm them down and you’ll be surprised but they’ll be absorbing the language at the same time.

A Love for Reading

We all know that reading aloud to children allows them to develop a love for reading as well as a love for learning, but when exactly should a mum start reading to her brand, new baby? Well, don’t wait any longer. Begin as early as possible. Research has shown that reading to your baby before she is born also has its benefits. Remember…the more a child is read to the better they’ll be able to express themselves later on. 29-year-old Cassandra Tan, now a mum of two, says, “I began reading to aloud to my babies before they were born. It felt like a great way for me to bond with my them.”
