The Visitor
Spider Magazine for Kids|February 2017

THE SIGHT OF a knobby head, bulging eyes, and long ferocious teeth might upset some Earth natives, but Commander Garg’s strange appearance did not seem to bother Mrs. Thompson.

The Visitor

She was damp-mopping the kitchen floor when he entered the house and was more concerned about the dirt he had tracked in. Waving aside her objections, he informed her of his orders to take a member of her species back to the planet Zarnos. Unfortunately, his language (which consisted of beeps and grunts) was incomprehensible to her.

“Stop making that silly noise and get off my floor,” she said.

Garg turned on his translator so she could understand him, but she still had no interest in going to Zarnos.

“Not now,” she said, pushing him out into the living room.

A teenage human named Tessa was sitting on the living room sofa, talking into a primitive communication device. Determined to carry out his mission, Garg shuffled over to her.

“Go away,” said Tessa, covering the instrument’s mouthpiece. “I’m trying to have an intelligent conversation here.”

Garg tried to explain that an intelligent conversation with an Earth native was exactly what his planetary council wanted, but the girl just glared at him and shook her head.

Garg could see he would have to resort to serious measures. Pulling out his laser pistol, he prodded Tessa in the knee.

Chopsticks

Shay can never hold her chopsticks properly. When she uses them, they crisscross and make an X, and sometimes she cannot quite pick up the slippery pieces of tofu. Her mother laughs.

Matthias and the Dragons

STRIDING QUICKLY ALONG, Matthias glanced uneasily at the black stone cliffs towering beside him. Ahead, a still lake swarmed with dark clouds of midges. Finally, he spied the faraway ocean. Now I know my way back, he thought. I’d better hurry. We’re leaving the inn this afternoon, and Father won’t be too pleased if I’m late.
