Hendrik Magdalenus (Dick) Bruna, a Dutch writer, illustrator, artist and graphic designer died on the 17th of February 2017. He was born on the 23rd of August 1927.
Dick Bruna has written and illustrated more than 200 children’s books. The most popular among them was Miffy and Friends. In the original Dutch version Miffy was called
Dick Bruna created Miffy, a small female rabbit, to tell stories to his one year old son Sierk. He made Miffy a female rabbit because he wanted to draw a dress and not trousers on his rabbit. Bruna used easy black graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colours to draw Miffy. The stories are simple with four lines of narrative and an illustration in each page. Bruna made sure that children read his books all by themselves, without help from adults.
