DEVELOPING THE CONCEPT

By Carlos Martinez Trujillo

The lagalá branding project began when Carolina Leyva, the owner of the gallery, contacted us. she’s a client we’ve worked with before on pop-up projects in fashion, culture and design. What she wanted was a brand identity for lagalá 56:426, a new art space in mérida, a city in eastern Mexico. The building was being converted from an old bakery into a gallery that would include a restaurant, a shop, a terrace, and areas to host events and workshops. as well as the core identity, she needed signage, stationery, merchandise and a website matching the look and feel of the space.

We were pleased to be invited to participate because we want to be part of the cultural change and growth that’s going on in mérida and the Yucatán region. The opportunity to work on a unique space for art, culture and design doesn’t come around very often.

On a project like this, the first thing we do is work on the concepts as a team internally, to try and understand its form and its soul. For lagalá, we invited the artist Cecilia martínez Luzarreta to contribute. She’s a great friend of our agency with vast experience in textiles, architecture, art and philosophy. We wanted to design an identity that would feed into a holistic experience for the gallery.
