A mainstream RTX card that’s affordable and still fast
A MAJOR COMPLAINT with Nvidia’s first generation of GeForce RTX cards was that the base model started at $500. With the release of the RTX 2060, that entry price point has dropped to $350, although this card from Zotac costs slightly more, at $370. That’s still a relatively high-end graphics card price, but the performance is at least on the same level as existing $370 GPUs, such as the GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Ti, and AMD’s RX Vega 56. And that’s for existing games. Future ray-tracing games, and games that use DLSS, should run substantially faster on the RTX 2060.
So, what does $370 get you? Basically, everything that’s in the $500 RTX 2070, just a bit less of each. There are 30 SMs instead of 36, and 6GB of GDDR6 instead of 8GB. To put that in perspective, the drop from the RTX 2070 to the RTX 2060 is more like the difference between the GTX 1070 Ti and GTX 1070, rather than the 1070 and 1060. That $370 also nets you support for real-time ray tracing and DLSS cleverness, and we’re talking a comparable drop in silicon, too, with 30 ray-tracing cores and 240 tensor cores as opposed to the RTX 2070’s 36 RT cores and 288 tensor cores.
