KWOK YIN MAK – PORTFOLIO

https://www.kwokyinmak.com

Kwok was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Florida and currently works for creative agency Ueno in New York. His wonderful portfolio website draws on what must be a hugely cosmopolitan 30-year background and demonstrates an impressive eye for UI design.

Opening on some hanzi characters, the site makes typography an important focal point throughout with oversized Anglo-Chinese translations. This cultural duality is obviously a theme for Kwok and the recognition that design has taken him a long way is underlined with real charm on the site. Hover over the About section and he tells you how many kilometres you are from his New York home, while emphasising a desire to collaborate.

The real star of this URL is its slick navigation. Swipe too vigorously and everything spins horizontally through the viewport but stick with it. Clicking, holding and dragging is favoured and gives a sense of discovery. The abandonment of any vertical motion, coupled with the Chinese text, evokes a precious digital scroll worthy of any design dynasty.

SNOOP DOGS

https://snoopdogs.dogstudio.co/

Primarily built to function as an interactive New Year card for their many fans, this quirky web game comes courtesy of the talented people at Dogstudio. The Belgian agency, which also boasts an office in Chicago, comprises a self-confessed “crazy team” that happen to win a crazy amount of awards.
