Director of Communication in APAC, DJI
DJI needs no introduction to anybody. The whole world knows— and loves—their products. One of the people behind making DJI such a recognizable and respected brand even to non-professionals or hobbyists is Kevin On, the Director of Communication at DJI for the Asia-Pacific region.
At the recent launch of DJI Spark, DJI’s smallest but still very powerful drone to date, Speed spent some alone time with Kevin On in an undisclosed room as the event continued entertaining the crowd right outside our door. On gave a preview of what it is like to work for one of the biggest technology companies in the world today.
What does the Director of Communication do exactly at DJI?
It’s everything outside of the job description. I think as a communication or marketing person, [my] job is to protect the brand, have a clear [and] transparent dialogue with external stakeholders, and really be the voice of the brand.
But for me what’s more interesting is helping our sales and business development teams to look at new opportunities, especially in Asia, where this technology could be used and what needs to be done to grow that market. That’s probably a little bit outside of my job scope. But it’s something that I’ve been doing quite a bit with our sales [and] business development teams—identify opportunities. Our fundamental mission has always been [to make] this complex technology easy to use, reliable, and also accessible to more people.
What is your typical day like at work?
There is no typical day. I’m based in Shenzhen. That is where our headquarters is. But I live in Hong Kong. The Shenzhen to Hong Kong commute for me is about 1.5 hours one way. I probably [spend] three days in Shenzhen, two days in Hong Kong.
