There is always something to inspire adventure at the Yorkshire seaside
THIS year marks the 250th anniversary of the start of Captain Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific. He left from Plymouth on his great research ship the HM Bark Endeavour in August 1768. The event will be marked by celebrations across the world along the route of his epic journey around Cape Horn to Tahiti, then the Pacific Islands and finally, New Zealand and Australia. But where better to start following in his footsteps than the house on Whitby’s Grape Lane where the great explorer lodged as a young boy, now the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. A new exhibition, Whitby in the Time of Cook, the Making of a Great Seaman (February 10th-November 4th) highlights the special character and growing prosperity of the North Yorkshire town in the 18th century, examining the unique features which made it one of the biggest ship-building centres in the country and a key centre for training young men for a tough life at sea.
