IF you take a winter break in Majorca, southern Italy or Spain in the winter, you may well see the fern-leaved clematis, Clematis cirrhosa, flowering as it scrambles over walls or in hedges or on low shrubs. It can do the same in your garden, too.

This is one of the essential winter flowers and in spite of being easy to grow and often happy in relatively inhospitable places, many gardeners are only dimly aware of its existence. So, what’s so special about the fern-leaved clematis?
