It’s the rare franchise that seems to just get better, twistier, and more delirious with each new installment. By now, we’ve become accustomed to these films’ signature money shots—that one stunt where Tom Cruise risks life and limb for our armchair amusement. Ghost Protocol (2011) had Ethan Hunt scaling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, and 2015’s Rogue Nation saw him hanging by his fingernails from a Russian cargo plane as it barreled down the runway and took flight. Mission: Impossible—Fallout has a half dozen of those scenes. At 56, Cruise won’t be satisfied until the audience cries “Uncle” or he winds up in traction.
