How do you know you’re ready to quit your job and start something on your own? Hemchhaya De helps you read the signs
After working almost 14 years at a TV news channel, Delhi-based Ipshita Chakladar decided to quit her job and follow her dreams. She set up her cake atelier, Cakes Mamma Bakes, which is now known for its gorgeous, customised special-occasion creations. She says, “I realised I was not going to get any younger. If I had to chase my dream, it would have to be now.” Chakladar’s story is proof that entrepreneurship is all about determination, passion and calculated risks.
Chaitali Sen*, in her late 30s, worked with a family-run events business in Kolkata and was exasperated with the office politics that was ruining her life at work. So she decided to quit and start a PR and events agency of her own. Sen says, “I wanted to go solo and enjoy being my own boss. I was tired of following others’ whims and fancies. Today, I’m happy with the way my business is shaping up.”
SPOT THE SIGNS
Like Chakladar and Sen, there are several successful entrepreneurs around the world who have built their own business empires after quitting their jobs. But how do you decide what will be the right time for you to go solo, or whether you should take the risk of leaving a cushy job to pursue a pipe dream? No one can become a successful entrepreneur overnight. If you’re tempted to quit your job to start something of your own, you must do a little self assessment first. You’ll know you’re ready if you can relate to the following statements.
