The first flush of romance can fade soon, if you and your partner do not make the effort to keep the spark alive. Neeti Jaychander gives you tips on how to do this
Actor Katie Holmes once said, “Tom and I will always be in our honeymoon phase.” Despite a romantic proposal and fairytale wedding, she and actor Tom Cruise called it quits after six years of marriage. The bottom line? Falling in love is easy, sustaining the romance, not so much.
In the beginning, you see everything through rose-tinted glasses and focus only on those traits of your partner that appeal to you the most. It lasts a while, but once this feeling wears off, it might seem like you are entering the realm of the mundane with your partner. In certain cases, cracks may begin to appear in your relationship. So, how do you prolong this sweet honeymoon period? Read on to know.
DO: COMMUNICATE
Often relationships fall by the wayside simply because partners do not bother to communicate enough. Harini Raman*, a 36-year-old freelance writer says, “When my ex-boyfriend and I split up, it came as a surprise to everyone since we were serious about each other. In hindsight, I realised it was the little things that added up, creating the angst.
I expected him to keep second-guessing me every time I was upset. He lost interest in doing so and started ignoring me. Incidents escalated to such an extent that we realised we were making each other miserable.” If something is bothering you, be frank about it without apportioning blame. Never jump to conclusions, and patiently hear your partner out over his concerns as well.
