In the UK, people are living longer. According to the Financial Conduct Authority one in three babies born today can expect to celebrate their 100th birthday, and by 2050 one in four of the population will be 65 and over. The government recently announced it will publish a green paper on care and support for older people this summer. While it’s good to see this recognition, we must hope it helps create a transparent, sustainable, long-term strategy that integrates social care, health and housing. People tend to have a blind spot when it comes to retirement planning – long-term care costs, even though the majority of us will at some point need it. Many underestimate the costs and mistakenly believe local authorities cover a substantial part of it.
