Passions run high at a Civil war hospital in a compelling new historical drama
A Civil War Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Downton Abbey meets The Knick’ are just some of the comparisons garnered by lavish new US period drama Mercy Street, which comes to our screens on Drama this week.
Inspired by real people and events, the six-part series is set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1862 at the height of the American Civil War, with the Southern town occupied by Union forces from the North.
New England nurse Mary Phinney (played by Fargo’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead) arrives to volunteer at Mansion House, a luxury hotel that’s been turned into a hospital for injured troops from both sides of the conflict.
