As the Winter Olympics begin, team GB speed skater Elise Christie reveals how she has recovered from death threats to set her sights on winning gold
Team GB speed skater Elise Christie won’t be the only athlete to feel nervous before going for gold at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang next week. But the 27-year-old from Livingston has more reason than most to worry about competing in South Korea.
Four years ago, at the Sochi Winter Games in Russia, Christie was racing in the 500m short-track final when she was disqualified for colliding with South Korean heroine Park Seung-hi, ruining her rival’s chances of victory.
In the aftermath, Christie became the victim of a ferocious barrage of online abuse from South Korean fans, including death threats.
