Over the past 20 years, there have been several documentaries about the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and the immediate aftermath. Now, a new C4 program, Children of 9/11: Our Story, offers a different perspective by looking at the impact on some of the estimated 108 children who were in their mother’s womb when they lost their fathers in the series of four coordinated attacks across the US.

Here, executive producer John Smithson tells TV Times about bringing the stories to our screen...

How did you set about making this documentary?

We wanted to do something that looked forward and not back at 9/11. So the idea of hearing from teenagers who’d lost a father they’d never met in such a public way – which is talked about every year – was fascinating.
