Out there in space…
After three decades of fringe-work, Claire Denis is unlikely to let starry leads, genre material or a bigger budget derail her off-piste instincts. Proof awaits in her foray into Englishlanguage sci-fi, where Robert Pattinson stretches himself anew. Between its tonal swerves, raw sexual imagery and murky metaphors, the result is prime Denis.
Pattinson plays Monte, an astronaut on a drifting spaceship with an infant daughter in tow. As a near-catastrophe stirs our anxieties, flashbacks reveal Monte and his fellow travellers to be death-row inmates on an expert mission to harness a black hole’s energy. Darker secrets involve Juliette Binoche’s Dr. Dibs, whose reproductive obsessions and grim past send body- fixated, taboo-teasing intrigues echoing around the prison ship’s corridors.
