'I Finally Realised I Wasn't Alone'

Mental health can be a difficult topic to discuss. These inspiring women open up about their own battles in order to encourage others to beat the stigma and get the help they need

'I Finally Realised I Wasn't Alone'

Researchers estimate 30% of South Africans will have suffered from some form of mental disorder in their lifetime. So it’s shocking that only a quarter of people in South Africa with a diagnosable mental illness are receiving treatment. What’s stopping people from coming forward? Shame at admitting that something might actually be wrong with them, fear of being stigmatised, a lack of awareness of the help that’s available to them, and the cost of treatment. here two women tell their stories of dealing with mental health concerns.

‘My diagnosis was a relief, and I was right to finally ask for help’’

Rebecca Bird is an admin assistant and lives with her teenage son Harley. About 10 years ago, my mom took her own life after struggling with depression. It was me who found her and although I was in complete shock, I had to keep going for my little boy Harley, who was just three at the time. Knowing that I wasn’t a good enough reason for my mom to stay alive made it hard not to blame myself. I started to struggle with depression and anxiety myself; rather than getting help, I kept quiet.

A TURN FOR THE WORSE

The next year was tough. I lost a baby at 13 weeks and my mom wasn’t there to help me through it. About six months later, my partner and I split up. I lost my home and I’d never felt so lonely.
