In a new series, we explore the current state of mind of the designers we love. Here, Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra take us through their creative journey.
IN AN INDUSTRY BUILT ON CREATIVITY, the inevitable commercial aspect of it might be frowned upon for hampering the virtuosity of fashion. And yet for Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra, the two can together be the perfect partners in creating a brand that’s both inspiring and individualistic. The duo’s conceptual 17-Year-Old brand is known for its progressive take on traditional garments. Often, it is underlined by ideas of gender equality and cross-cultural inspiration. Designed for both men and women, Shantanu&Nikhil bridges the gap between Indian and international, classic and contemporary, high fashion and sporty. It’s the art of pulling an iconoclastic look together from so many influences that helped the duo produce memorable pieces such as sari gowns befitting the new-age bride, draped kurtas, and active-wear-inspired jackets. In a freewheeling chat with Shweta Shiware, they tell us how they will steer their design journey ahead.
Describe your current state of mind.
Shantanu Mehra: Feminine/masculine, hard/soft, defend/protect is the new dialogue in our mind.
Nikhil Mehra: Gratifying and raring to go.
