Italian Goes British!
L'OFFICIEL Singapore|November 2016

Gucci’s Resort 2017 show at London’s 700-year-old church Westminster Abbey, which hosted a fashion runway show for the first time, saw Alessandro Michele delving into Britain’s sartorial archives as he referenced the city’s subcultural tribes and Renaissance silhouettes.

Italian Goes British!

THE SHOW

Alessandro Michele was on the move again. Where to next?

Oh! Westminster Abbey, in the heart of London, where Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, Princess Diana’s funeral was held and Kate Middleton wed Prince William. And now, creative director of Gucci Alessandro Michele has presented a fashion show there – a first for the brand as well as the 700-year-old church.

The Cruise collection was shown inside the Cloisters in Westminster Abbey. It was cold and grey for a summer’s day in London and we were welcomed by tasseled velvet and tapestried pillows embroidered with flowers, cats, rabbits, snakes, tigers and bees – elements that were patched onto everything from studded denim jackets and intarsia fur coats to delicate evening gowns, as well as those signature loafers that have been selling like hot cakes since Michele’s first collection for Gucci. After the show, we got to keep the pillows as souvenirs.
