Amita Suman is on the cusp of stardom. She’s part of the young ensemble cast of relative newcomers handpicked to helm the next big fantasy series Shadow And Bone, scheduled to drop on Netflix later this month. There’s little doubt that this production, based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Grishaverse trilogy and one of 2021’s biggest on an OTT platform, will catapult the Nepal-born 23-year-old actor into the spotlight.
“Inej [her character] is unique in that she is a badass woman of colour in an epic fantasy drama. And I am not just ticking the diversity box in a big Netflix production,” explains Suman, speaking to me via Zoom from her quaint Airbnb apartment in London. She looks stunning, quite like the wraith she’s portraying in the series, with her long black hair sleekly tied back, minimal makeup and eyes that speak volumes. And she is right, her character isn’t just the token brown girl. Suman plays the fierce, powerful and absolutely kickass knife-wielding assassin Inej Ghafa.
