After having flown our pressurised Piper Navajo for some time, we decided another - larger - aircraft was needed. But more important, we needed a really good secretary. This is the story of acquiring both.

But first things first. When you start a charter company in The Netherlands, a number of steps have to be taken. When applying, you should include an Operation Manual, a Maintenance Manual, a so-called Organisation Chart and a few names of people who you would like to have as Chief Pilot and Head of Maintenance. It is not sure that one of those people on the list will be accepted by the RijksLuchtvaartDienst (CAA). The RLD appoints and you have to put them on your payroll. We had the good fortune to get the Chief Pilot of our choice. When I was a junior pilot I gave Radio Telephony courses for people to obtain their VFR/IFR RT licence. One of my students was the director of Rockwell International in Europe. He had a company pilot and they flew a Rockwell 690B Commander. He asked me for private tuition at his house. He was a pleasant man and learned quickly. I developed a good relationship with his company pilot and when we started our charter company I asked him to become our Chief Pilot, which he accepted. He was a very hands-on guy. Once he brought 15 fantastic bomber jackets, different sizes and all brand new. He figured that this was better than a classical uniform.

We had similar good luck with the Head of Maintenance. This guy was the chief and only mechanic at the Delft University for Aeronautical and Space Studies. At that time the university had one aircraft, a DeHavilland Beaver. The university was experimenting with flyby-wire and they designed a system to be installed in this Beaver. Surely this was the only Beaver in the world with fly-by-wire. Anyhow, he had a lot of spare time because the aircraft hardly flew, so he accepted the part-time job.
