An aircraft maintenance organization is on the forefront of importance for any company or person within the aviation industry. To short cut or neglect maintenance on any aircraft is irresponsible and a threat to life. AMO’s are expensive, however taking good care of engines and an aircraft, can assist in extending engine life and ensure the safety of pilots and passengers.

An aircraft owner needs a good understanding of the potential problem areas applicable to their aircraft type. Different aircraft have different problem areas, and the AMO needs to be experienced in that aircraft type.

There are many maintenance shops in South Africa that are agents for particular aircraft and engines, whether just one or several types. A reputable AMO is of utmost importance.

All maintenance related actions on an aircraft or component are required to be documented by the performing technician in the aircraft or component logbook. These can differ where light aircraft may have only one logbook for all work performed. Some aircraft may have a separate engine logbook for any work performed on the engine/s while other aircraft have separate propeller logbooks.

How to improve on an engine’s lifespan.

Purchasing an aircraft is huge investment and the best place to ensure that the engine has a long, healthy lifespan is listening to the recommendations of the manufacturer.

On the ground, mistakes and poor servicing can be rectified, a driver can stop a vehicle when problems occur. In the air, there is no such option. Proper maintenance is essential and this includes calibration of the engine-driven fuel system, something that is frequently overlooked. Engine manufacturers recommend that this be done at the annual inspection or every 100 hours. As with any engine, if it is not receiving the correct amount of fuel for the power demanded, in-flight detonation is a possibility as well as possible valve and cylinder problems in the future if the fuel-air charge entering the cylinders is incorrect. Aircraft that have been stored or used very seldom it is important to check for corrosion damage in the engine.
